Good afternoon Jalops, after doing some careful analysis I think I know what the Tesla Model D will be. Sadly, my comments do not appear on the front page as I am trying to help the discussion. Here are my thoughts on the D:

As journalists, we have to look at this logically.

Tesla currently makes the Model S.

Tesla will soon be delivering the Model X, and the Model 3.

D, is the fourth letter in the Alphabet. Thus, "D" will be a fourth Tesla Model car.

The D will fit in to the lineup where the other 3 models do not.

I predict the D will be the second generation Tesla Roadster.

A new roadster would slot in nicely with the high-end sedan (S), mid-level sedan (3) and the Suv/wagon/crossover/family car (X).

The "something else" will probably have to do with a new drive-train option which will be first used in the Model D and then will be optional on the other models at a later date.

You all are idiots. D obviously stands for diesel.

I would be intrigued by a diesel range extender. And I could see a benefit to using one if extending the range of the lineup allows for additional CAFE Credits that they can then sell.
Otherwise I'd have a hard time believing "D" was for diesel.

Also "D" could simply stand for Driveline, as in a AWD like setup using torque-vectoring motors at each wheel. And it would make sense that they might use a modified chassis of something they already have to implement the new driveline in a new Roadster and across the model line.

Coincidence? I think not.

Volkswagen uses diesel in their ultra-high-efficiency cars, and German engineering is better than American engineering. Tesla would be smart to follow Volkswagen's example.

This sounds to me like criticism of the Great Musk and a suggestion that the sun, contrary to widely held belief, does not shine from his nether regions.

Blasphemy, in certain quarters.

The "Something Else" is a complimentary ticket to his Mars base with purchase of any new Tesla car.
